Acceptance Criteria

 Donors

Dogs

1. Donations at no greater frequency than 2 monthly intervals.

2. Good state of health, do not appear stressed, are compliant and settled and can be handled without excessive restraint. The donor should be examined by a veterinary surgeon prior to blood collection to ensure the animal is in a good state of general health and in the case of repeat donors, the veterinary surgeon is responsible for ensuring no changes have taken place since the last donation that could have a detrimental effect on the donor or subsequent recipient.

3. No history of surgery or adverse medical conditions in the six months prior to donation.

4. Not on any medication beyond dewormers.

5. Animals that are pregnant, whelping, or nursing are not permitted to be blood donors.

6. Donors should not have ever travelled outside the UK/Rep. Ireland.

7. Not having received any blood transfusion nor previously experienced adverse effects following donations.

8. Donors should be skeletally mature adults (fully grown) and not be more than 8 years old.

9. Animals must be fully vaccinated (including against Rabies virus) and dewormed. Donors will only be accepted if the vaccine has been given for more than 2 weeks.

10. Dogs must not be sedated to facilitate donations.

11. Dogs must be a minimum weight of 25 kgs to allow up to 450mls of blood to be withdrawn at any one session.

12. Dogs should have an haemoglobin concentration over 12 g/dl.

13. An informed consent must be given by owners for their animal to donate blood.

14. Donors without an existing and unique identifier should have a microchip implanted prior to donation.

Cats
